Sweden-China Relations

China–Sweden relations commenced after mainland China came under communist rule in the early 1950s

History

Diplomatic relations between the People's Republic of China and the Kingdom of Sweden were formally established on May 9, 1950. But Swedish and China's ties goes back even longer. In the 17th century, Swedish people traded with China and this was recorded by Nils Matson Kioping. He visited southern China on the ship Gothenburg in 1654 and wrote accounts of China when he returned.

Sweden was one of the first European country to recognize the People's Republic of China in the 1950s. It has always supported the return of China's legitimate seat in the United Nations.

King Carl XVI and Queen Silvia of Sweden made an official visit to China in 2006. It was their first visit to China in 25 years.

This year 2010 marked the 60th year of the establishment of China-Sweden diplomatic relations. This resulted in the establishment and development of Nordic Confucius Institute in Sweden to further promote and develop Sino-Swedish relationship.

Bilateral relations

In 2006, trade value between the two countries came up to 6.73 billion U.S. dollars. Sweden has become China's ninth-largest trading partner in the European Union and China has been Sweden's largest trade partner in Asia for four consecutive years
