Colombia-China Relations
Minister Deming's visit includes the Eighth Meeting of the Joint Committee of Economics and Trade and the business forum, "Trade and Investment Opportunities in China," which will also involve Minister Diaz-Granados and the President of Proexport, Maria Claudia Lacouture.
This visit is expected to further strengthen relations with China, a country in which Colombia has signed several trade instruments in recent years, These include agreements and memoranda of understanding on cooperation in various fields, such as a Memorandum of Understanding for the provision of Chinese tourists to travel to Colombia and the Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT), which came into force on July 2nd.
For Colombia, this meeting is of great importance to the goal of strengthen relations with China. China has a population of approximately 1.5 billion, and it is the second largest economy in the world. Some of its strengths in competitiveness include a high level of technological development, excellent logistics distribution, and huge economies of scale, among others. All, of which, make the nation a market leader.
Minister Diaz-Granados said that the visit comes after more than a decade. The last visit of a Trade Minister from China was made by Shi Guangshen, who was the Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, in 2000.
Minister Deming's visit was agreed during the official visit of President Santos to China, which took place in May 2012, when the trade ministers from China and Colombia met.
As explained by Minister Diaz-Granados the business forum is expected to encourage entrepreneurs to seek business opportunities between the two countries, especially in agriculture and agribusiness. And in parallel with this event, there will be the Eighth Meeting of the Joint Committee of Economics and Trade, which aims to promote a more dynamic economic and cooperation issues.
During the meeting of the Joint Committee, there will be an exchange views on the development of bilateral economic relations, the details of the implementation of the Joint Study Group for the feasibility of a potential free trade agreement negotiations between the two nations, plus some issues of the bilateral trade agenda," the Minister Diaz-Granados explained.
