The year 2010 marked the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the People's Republic of China and the Kingdom of Sweden. Bilateral exchanges and cooperation in all fields continued to deepen.


The two countries maintained close and frequent high-level contacts and exchange of visits. On 27-30 March, Vice President Xi Jinping visited Sweden. During the visit, he had meetings or talks respectively with King Carl XVI Gustaf, Speaker of Parliament Per Westerberg, Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Enterprise and Energy Maud Olofsson. Leaders of the two countries spoke highly of the achievements in cooperation in all fields over the past 60 years and charted the course for future development of the bilateral relations.


On 11-13 September, Liu Qi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, visited Sweden and met with Speaker Per Westerberg and Foreign Minister Carl Bildt. On 20-24 May, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Enterprise and Energy Maud Olofsson came to China for the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the National Pavilion Day of Sweden at the Shanghai World Expo.


They met respectively with President Hu Jintao, Vice Premier Li Keqiang and CPPCC Vice Chairman Wang Gang. On 8-13 November, King Carl XVI Gustaf led the Swedish Royal Technology Mission to China and met respectively with Vice President Xi Jinping and State Councilor Liu Yandong. Crown Princess Victoria and her husband as well as Princess Madeleine paid private visits to China respectively in October and November. In April, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Prime Minister Reinfeldt sent messages of condolences to President Hu Jintao over the mudslide disaster in Zhouqu, Gansu Province. In May, President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao exchanged congratulatory messages with King Carl XVI Gustaf and Prime Minister Reinfeldt on the 60th anniversary of China-Sweden diplomatic relations.


Exchanges were close between legislatures. From 30 May to 3 June, NPC Vice Chairman Hua Jianmin visited Sweden and had separate meetings with Speaker of the Parliament Per Westerberg and First Deputy Speaker Jan Björkman. In May, CPPCC Vice Chairman Chen Kuiyuan visited Sweden. In June, CPPCC Vice Chairman Zheng Wantong made a stopover in Sweden. In May, First Deputy Speaker Jan Björkman visited China.


There were many highlights in bilateral economic cooperation and trade. Progress was made in cooperation between Chinese and Swedish enterprises and two way investment. The two countries remained as each other's largest trading partner in Asia and the Nordic region. The China-Sweden Business Cooperation and Innovation Forum was held successfully in Stockholm in March, and the two sides concluded ten important cooperation agreements and business contracts in the fields of corporate social responsibility, communications and electronics, and trade in mineral products. Zhejiang Geely Holding Group's acquisition of Volvo Car Corporation became the largest overseas acquisition by Chinese auto enterprises. In April, Minister for Trade Ewa Björling visited China.


Cultural and people-to-people exchanges thrived. The two countries signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of the Kingdom of Sweden on Cooperation in the Field of Culture 2010-2014. The 5th "Happy Chinese New Year" and the 2nd "Chinese Bridge- Chinese Language Competition of Swedish Middle School and University Students" were held in Sweden. Sweden supported and took an active part in the Shanghai World Expo. The National Pavilion of Sweden named "Spirit of Innovation" received a total number of 3.5 million visitors and won the gold prize of creative exhibition granted by the International Exhibition Bureau. The Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities in Stockholm held a five-month exhibition of Chinese terra-cotta warriors.


There were frequent exchanges in science, education, health and other fields. The 2nd China-Sweden Joint Committee on Cooperation on Science and Technology was held in Sweden in February. In May, China and Sweden co-hosted the China-Sweden Innovation Forum in Beijing . In October, the 4th Sino-Karolinska Institute Medical Symposium was held in Sweden. A number of Chinese officials visited Sweden including: Minister of Health Chen Zu, Vice Minister of Land and Resources Wang Shiyuan, Vice Minister of State Administration of Radio, Film and Television Tian Jin, and Vice Minister of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine Zhi Shuping. From the Swedish side, Minister for Children and the Elderly Maria Larsson and State Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Research Peter Honeth visited China.


Military exchanges were closer. High-ranking officers such as General Chang Wanquan, Member of the Central Military Commission and Minister of the General Armament Department of the PLA, President of University of National Defense General Wang Xibing and Political Commissar of the Academy of Military Science General Liu Yuan visited Sweden.


Exchanges between local governments were dynamic. Fujian Province and Zhuhai of Guangdong Province set up sister province or city relationships respectively with Gotland and Gävle. The Beijing Municipal government signed an agreement of strategic cooperation with Ericsson Group. Leaders of relevant provinces visited Sweden, which included: Vice Governor of Jiangsu Province Li Xiaomin, Vice Governor of Heilongjiang Province Wang Yupu, Vice Governor of Hubei Province Zhao Bing, Vice Governor of Liaoning Province Zhao Guohong and Vice Chairman of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Guo Qijun. From the Swedish side, local leaders who visited China included: County Governor of Gävleborg Barbro Holmberg, County Governor of Västerbotten Chris Heister, County Governor of Östergötland Elisabeth Nilsson and Vice President of the Regional Assembly of Skåne Thomas Lantz.


On 21 August, the term of Swedish Ambassador to China Mikael Lindström ended. On 1 December, new Ambassador Lars Fredén presented his credentials to President Hu Jintao.
