Nepal, officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, is a landlocked sovereign state located in South Asia. With an area of 147,181 square kilometres (56,827 sq mi) and a population of approximately 27 million (and nearly 2 million absentee workers living abroad), Nepal is the world's 93rd largest country by land mass and the 41st most populous country. In 2010, the comprehensive partnership of cooperation featuring ever-lasting friendship between the People's Republic of China and the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal maintained a good momentum of sound and steady growth. Friendly exchanges and cooperation in various fields were further expanded.

The two countries maintained the momentum of high-level exchanges. From 26 October to 2 November, President Ram Baran Yadav attended the Closing Ceremony of the Shanghai World Expo and paid a visit to Lhasa and Xian. Premier Wen Jiabao met with President Yadav and the Nepali delegation, and the two sides reached a series of consensus on furthering China-Nepal relations. From 21 to 24 October, Vice President Paramananda Jha attended the 11th Western China International Fair and visited Lhasa. From 3 to 5 September, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala led a delegation to attend the activities of the Nepal National Pavilion Day and visited Yunnan Province.

Relevant departments and militaries of the two countries maintained friendly exchanges. From 6 to 12 February, Home Minister Bhim Rawal visited China and held talks with State Councilor and Minister of Public Security Meng Jianzhu. The two sides signed the Minute of the Meeting, and decided to establish a Vice-Minister level consultation mechanism on border law enforcement cooperation. From 23 to 29 March, Defense Minister Bidhya Devi Bhandari paid a visit to China during which she held talks with General Liang Guanglie, State Councilor and Defense Minister, and met with Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee Zhou Yongkang. From 26 to 29 July, Vice Minister of Public Security Chen Zhimin attended the first round of consultations on Border Law Enforcement Cooperation between China and Nepal.

The Communist Party of China maintained exchanges with major political parties of Nepal. From 24 to 28 February, Vice Minister Liu Jieyi of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee visited Nepal and attended the International Conference of Asian Political Parties. From 20 to 23 March, Zhao Lei, Member of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Shaanxi Provincial Committee visited Nepal. From 11 to 16 September, He Yong, Member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and Deputy Secretary of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, paid a visit to Nepal during which he met with President Yadav, Prime Minister Nepal, Chairman of the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) Prachanda, and leaders of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) and the Nepali Congress Party.

Business ties between the two countries continued to deepen. The Chinese government continued to help Nepal, within its capacity, to advance economic and social development. In May, the two sides signed and exchanged notes under which China would offer zero-tariff treatment to 60% of Nepal's products covering 4,721 categories with no strings attached.

China-assisted projects in Nepal such as the Syafrubensi–Rasuwagadhi Road Project proceeded smoothly. From 15 to 18 September, Quan Zhezhu, Vice Minister of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee and Party Secretary and First Vice Chairman of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, attended the 11th Meeting of China-Nepal Non-Governmental Cooperation Forum.

From 19 to 22 December, Wan Jifei, Chairman of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), led a business delegation to attend the 11th annual general meeting of the Nepal-China Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Nepal and signed a Memorandum of Understanding between Confederation of Nepalese Industries and the CCPIT. On 23 December, China and Nepal signed the Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal under which China would render assistance gratis to Nepal.

Progress was made in cultural and people-to-people exchanges. From 10 to 17 April, the China-Nepal Youth Exchange Mechanism was officially launched, and the first group of 30 young people from Nepal visited China. From 8 to 9 August, the first China-South Asia Culture Forum was successfully held at the Confucius Institute at Kathmandu University. From 5 to 7 December, Culture Minister Cai Wu led a Chinese government cultural delegation to visit Nepal, during which he met with President Yadav and held talks with Minister for Federal Affairs, Constituent Assembly, Parliamentary Affairs and Culture Minendra Rijal. Broad consensus was reached on further developing cultural exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.

Nepal continued to give China staunch support on Taiwan and Tibet-related matters and undertook not to allow any forces to use the territory of Nepal for any anti-China activities. The two countries maintained close coordination and cooperation on regional and international affairs.
