Niger, officially the Republic of Niger, is a landlocked country in Western Africa, named after the Niger River. It borders Nigeria and Benin to the south, Burkina Faso and Mali to the west, Algeria and Libya to the north and Chad to the east. Niger covers a land area of almost 1,270,000 km2, making it the largest nation in West Africa, with over 80 percent of its land area covered by the Sahara desert. The country's predominantly Islamic population of just above 15,000,000 is mostly clustered in the far south and west of the nation. In 2010, the friendly relations and cooperation in various fields between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Niger continued to grow.


The two countries maintained friendly exchanges at all levels. In April and August, President of the Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy of Niger Salou Djibo sent letters of condolence to President Hu Jintao to express sympathy on the damages caused by the earthquake in Yushu, Qinghai province and the devastating flood and mudslide in Zhouqu, Gansu province. From 23 to 25 May, Ambassador Liu Guijin, Special Representative for African Affairs of the Chinese government visited Niger and met with President of the Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy Salou Djibo, President of the National Consultative Committee Marou Amadou and Prime Minister of the Transitional government Mahamadou Danda.


On 3 August, Zada Mariama, Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Promotion of the Young Entrepreneurs of Niger led a delegation to China and attended the Niger National Pavilion Day events at the Shanghai World Expo. From 28 August to 3 September, Niger Minister of Economy and Finance Badamassi Annou and Niger Minister of Mine and Energy Souleymane Mamadou Abba led a delegation to China.


Cooperation between the two countries in economic, trade and other fields made further progress. The second Bridge on Niger River, a Chinese assistance project, went on smoothly and was near completion. The 16th Chinese medical team and the experts of the 9th stadium technical cooperation team arrived and began working in Niger. Under the framework of the FOCAC eight new measures to assist Africa, the two sides signed and exchanged notes on zero tariff treatment for some Niger exports to China. China provided RMB 10 million yuan and one million US dollars in emergency food aid to the Niger government through bilateral channel and the World Food Program respectively. In August, the FM programs of the China Radio International were officially launched in three cities in Niger.
