History

Relations between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Malawi continued to strengthen and develop in 2010.


The two sides maintained the momentum of high-level exchanges. Political exchanges were close and political mutual trust was enhanced. In May, Chairman of the NPC Foreign Affairs Committee Li Zhaoxing visited Malawi and attended the inauguration ceremony of the Parliament Building of Malawi built with China's assistance. In July, Vice Minister of Commerce Jiang Zengwei visited Malawi. In September, alternate member of the CPC Central Committee and Deputy General Secretary of CPC Chongqing Municipal Committee Zhang Xuan led a delegation to visit Malawi. In April, President of Malawi Bingu Wa Mutharika visited China and attended the opening ceremony of the Shanghai World Expo.


President Hu Jintao met with him. In December, Speaker of Malawi National Assembly Henry Chimunthu Banda visited China. Minister of the Department of Tourism, Wildlife and Culture of Malawi Anna Kachikho and the delegation of the ruling party of Malawi, the Democratic Progress Party, visited China in May and March respectively.


Chinese assistance projects in Malawi made good progress, and practical cooperation between the two countries produced initial results. The Parliament Building with Chinese assistance was completed and put into use in May, the Karonga-Chitipa Road was partly completed, and the Lilongwe International Convention Center and its attached hotel were in construction. The two sides had consultations on projects in Malawi under the framework of FOCAC. Two-way trade increased rapidly and became more balanced. The two countries signed the Exchange of Letters on the Granting of Zero-Tariff Treatment to 60% of Products from Malawi to China in March. The Malawi Cotton Company set up with joint investment from China-African Development Fund, China Colored Cotton Group and Qingdao Ruichang Cotton Industrial Co, Ltd. brought real benefits to more than 100,000 local farming households.


Cooperation between the two countries in culture, public health, news media and human resources training and grass-root friendly exchanges went smoothly. In May, the two governments signed the Cultural Agreement Between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of the Republic of Malawi. Now there are 16 Chinese medical workers in Malawi. In April, two journalists from major Malawi media organizations came to China to cover the opening ceremony of the Shanghai World Expo. In December, a journalist delegation of Malawi state television, radio station and major newspapers visited China. A total of 140 Malawi officials and technical personnel from various sectors received training in China. President of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries Chen Haosu visited Malawi in November. Twenty young Chinese volunteers completed their work in Malawi.


In August, Chinese Ambassador to Malawi Lin Songtian left office. On 29 October, the new Chinese Ambassador to Malawi Pan Hejun presented the Letter of Credence to President Mutharika.
