In 2010, relations between the People's Republic of China and Ireland continued to develop steadily, with remarkable results of mutually beneficial cooperation in all fields.


The two countries maintained high-level contact. In September, Li Changchun, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee, paid a visit to Ireland. He met with President Mary Mcaleese and had talks with Prime Minister Brian Cowen. In the wake of the Qinghai Yushu earthquake, President Mary Mcaleese sent a letter of condolences to President Hu Jintao. In June, President Mary Mcaleese attended the Irish national pavilion day activities at the Shanghai World Expo. Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met and hosted President Mary Mcaleese in Beijing . In May, Irish Foreign Minister Micheal Martin visited China. Vice Premier Li Keqiang had a meeting and Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi had talks with him.


Economic cooperation and trade resumed growth. While the Irish economy was not fully out of recession, trade between the two countries posted positive growth. Since 2005, China has maintained its position as Ireland's biggest trading partner in Asia. In October, the two sides successfully held the 11th meeting of the economic, trade, science and technology commission.


The two sides had active exchanges in cultural, educational, scientific and technological fields. During the visit by Li Changchun, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee, the two sides signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Culture Exchange and Cooperation Between the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China and the Department of Tourism, Culture, and Sport of Ireland, the Memorandum of Understanding on Economic Cooperation Between the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China and Department of Enterprise, Trade and Innovation of Ireland and the draft Memorandum of Understanding Between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Ireland Concerning the Capital Funding for UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland.


The Irish government actively participated in the Shanghai World Expo and the national pavilion of Ireland became an important platform of cultural and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries. The educational departments of the two countries held the first consultation meeting. The level of exchanges between universities has been raised and the area of cooperation in education and scientific research has been expanded. NUI Maynooth University and another university signed cooperation agreements with Chinese universities.
