Embassy of China in Madagascar

Madagascar, officially the Republic of Madagascar and previously known as the Malagasy Republic, is an island country in the Indian Ocean, off the southeastern coast of Africa. The nation comprises the island of Madagascar (the fourth-largest island in the world), as well as numerous smaller peripheral islands. Following the prehistoric breakup of the supercontinent Gondwana, Madagascar split from India around 88 million years ago, allowing native plants and animals to evolve in relative isolation. Consequently, Madagascar is a biodiversity hotspot; over 90 percent of its wildlife is found nowhere else on Earth. The island's diverse ecosystems and unique wildlife are threatened by the encroachment of the rapidly growing human population. Read More

The relations between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Madagascar maintained steady development in 2010.

The two countries continued to push forward their practical cooperation. In March, a delegation from the Hunan Agricultural Science Institute went to Madagascar for the on-site evaluation of the hybrid rice project. In June, the Tamatave elementary school built with Chinese assistance was completed and handed over to the Madagascan side. In December, China offered a US$100,000 emergency assistance to Madagascar to wipe out locusts. Projects under the framework of FOCAC, namely China-Africa friendship elementary school and the second-phase of the Demonstration Center of Hybrid Rice, progressed smoothly.

The two countries maintained good cooperation in education, human resources and personnel training. In 2010, China offered 23 scholarships to Madagascar, and a total of 82 people from Madagascar participated in different kinds of training programs in China.

In January, China inaugurated the new premise of the Chinese Embassy in Madagascar. In May, Ambassador of Madagascar Victor Sikonina led a delegation to Shanghai for the National Pavilion Day of Madagascar at the World Expo.
