The Bahamas officially the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, is a country consisting of more than 3,000 islands, cays and islets in the Atlantic Ocean, north of Cuba and Hispaniola (the Dominican Republic and Haiti), northwest of the Turks and Caicos Islands, southeast of the U.S. state of Florida and east of the Florida Keys. In 2010, the friendly and cooperative relations between the People's Republic of China and the Bahamas continued to deepen with productive cooperation in all fields.


The two countries maintained the momentum of high-level exchange of visits and deepened political mutual trust. In May, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Li Jinzhang visited the Bahamas. During the visit, he met with Governor-General Arthur Foukles and Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham and co-chaired with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Brent Symonette the fourth consultation between the foreign ministries of China and the Caribbean countries having diplomatic ties with China. In the same month, Secretary of the CPC Hainan Provincial Committee Wei Liucheng visited the Bahamas.


In October, Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham attended the closing ceremony of the Shanghai World Expo and visited China. He met respectively with NPC Chairman Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao and Vice Premier Hui Liangyu. At the same time, President of the Senate Lynn Holowesko and Speaker of the House of Representatives Alvin Smith paid a joint visit to China and had meetings and talks with NPC Chairman Wu Bangguo and Vice Chairperson Uyunqimg respectively.


Economic cooperation and trade enjoyed rapid development. Smooth progress was made in bilateral cooperation projects. China State Construction Engineering Corporation won the contracting of the Cable Beach resort project and the construction was about to start. Construction of the Bahamas National Stadium project built with Chinese assistance made smooth progress. The two sides signed an agreement on the construction of the expressway of the Nassau International Airport built with the Chinese concessional loan.


Cultural and people-to-people exchanges continued to grow. Chinese teachers selected by the Chinese side arrived in the Bahamas for teaching at the Confucius Classroom at the College of the Bahamas. Young Chinese pianists performed in the Bahamas and table tennis players of the Bahamas came to China for training.
