Mauritius, officially the Republic of Mauritius (Mauritian Creole: Republik Moris; French: République de Maurice) is an island nation in the Indian Ocean about 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) off the south east coast of the African continent. The country includes the islands of Mauritius, Rodrigues, 560 kilometres (350 mi) east of the principal island, the islands of Agaléga and the Saint Brandon. In 2010, the friendly and cooperative relationship between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Mauritius continued to develop in a healthy and smooth manner.
The two countries maintained a sound momentum of high-level contact. In May, after the general election of Mauritius, NPC Chairman Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao and Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi sent congratulatory messages to Speaker of the National Assembly Rajkeswur Purryag, Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade Arvin Boolell respectively on their successful re-election. From 30 August to 6 September, President Anerood Jugnauth attended the event of the National Pavilion Day of Mauritius at the Shanghai Expo and visited Beijing and Guangzhou. NPC Vice Chairman Wang Zhaoguo met with him.
Bilateral economic cooperation and trade made steady progress. The new Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation Headquarter at Reduit was smoothly completed. A number of projects progressed smoothly, including the Mauritius CCTV surveillance and Radio Communication Systems, the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport expansion project and the infrastructure construction in the Jinfei Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone.
There were dynamic exchanges between the political parties, the judicial organs and different localities of the two countries and in the scientific, technological and cultural fields. A number of delegations visited Mauritius, including those led by Alternate Member of the CPC Central Committee and Deputy Party Secretary of Hunan Province Mei Kebao, Chairman of China National Tourism Administration Shao Qiwei, Vice Minister of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee You Lantian and high-level delegations of the All-China Women's Federation, the Ministry of Science and Technology, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade and municipality or provinces of Beijing , Guangdong , Jiangxi and Shanxi . Chief Justice Bernard Sik Yuen and Attorney-General Yatindra Nath Varma attended the Second Legal Officials' Forum under FOCAC in China. Many parliamentarians, scholars and journalists from Mauritius also visited China or attended meetings in China.
The cities of Quatre Bornes and Vacoas Phoenix of Mauritius and the cities of Daqing and Nantong of China established friendly city relationships respectively.
