Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1971, the relationship between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Lebanon has enjoyed steady growth and the bilateral exchanges at various levels have been expanding. The two countries have achieved continuous progress in their friendly cooperation in various fields and maintained good communication and coordination on major international and regional issues.
In 2010, the two countries continued to carry out political exchanges. In January, Vice Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee Li Jinjun visited Lebanon. He had separate meetings with President Michel Suleiman, Prime Minister Saad Al-Hariri and Speaker of the National Assembly Nabih Berri. In June, China's Special Envoy on the Middle East Wu Sike visited Lebanon. He met with Prime Minister Saad Al-Hariri and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Ali Al-Chami. In May, Minister Ali Al-Chami came to China to attend the Fourth Ministerial Meeting of China-Arab Cooperation Forum. In June, Minister of Economy and Trade Mohammad Al-Safadi attended the National Pavilion Day of Lebanon at the Shanghai World Expo. In September, Minister of Finance Raya Haffar attended the China International Fair for Investment and Trade. In November, Minister of Youth and Sports Ali Hussein Abdullah attended the opening ceremony of the 16th Asian Games in China.
China and Lebanon maintained good communication and cooperation on international and regional issues of common interest. China supported Lebanon's efforts to uphold sovereignty and territorial integrity, safeguard political and social stability, promote national reconciliation and unity and develop the national economy. Lebanon was committed to the one China principle and supported the position of the Chinese government on matters related with Taiwan , Tibet and Xinjiang .
The two countries made smooth progress in their practical cooperation in other fields. The bilateral trade rose by a large margin compared with 2009. China continued to support and actively participate in the UN peacekeeping and mine clearance missions in southern Lebanon and sent the seventh peacekeeping engineering unit and the sixth peacekeeping medical team to the country. The year 2010 marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Comrade Ma Haide (Lebanonese decendent), an internationalist and leader in public health in New China, for whom commemorative activities were held in China.
