Kenya, officially the Republic of Kenya, is a country in East Africa that lies on the equator. With the Indian Ocean to its south-east, it is bordered by Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west, South Sudan to the north-west, Ethiopia to the north and Somalia to the north-east. Kenya has a land area of 581,309 km2 and a population of a little over 43½ million residents in early 2013. In 2010, the friendly and cooperative relationship of long-term stability and mutual benefit between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Kenya enjoyed further and in-depth growth.


There were frequent high-level exchanges. From 2 to 5 June, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and CPPCC Vice Chairman Wang Gang paid an official good-will visit to Kenya. He met with President Mwai Kibaki, Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga and Vice President Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka and held talks with Speaker of the National Assembly Kenneth Marende. From 1 to 3 September, NPC Vice Chairwoman Chen Zhili paid an official good-will visit to Kenya. She met with President Kibaki and Vice President Musyoka and held talks with Speaker Marende. From 6 to 8 January, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi visited Kenya and held talks with Foreign Minister Moses Wetangula.


Yang also met with President Kibaki and Prime Minister Odinga. From 29 April to 3 May, President Kibaki paid a state visit to China and attended the Opening Ceremony of Expo Shanghai 2010. President Hu Jintao held talks with him. President Hu called Kenya an important cooperation partner of China in Africa and said that China valued its traditional friendship with Kenya and stood ready to work with Kenya to deepen bilateral friendly cooperation in various fields. President Kibaki said that Kenya attached a lot of importance to its long-standing and close relationship with China, and that Kenya was ready to expand economic relations and trade and strengthen infrastructure cooperation with China. In August, Vice President Musyoka attended the Forum on China-Africa Agricultural Cooperation in China.


Exchanges between different agencies and localities continued to grow. A number of senior Chinese delegations visited Kenya, including those led by Member of the Standing Committee of CPPCC and Executive Vice President of China National Democratic Construction Association Ma Peihua, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the PLA General Ma Xiaotian, Chairman of China National Tourism Administration Shao Qiwei, Vice Minister of Commerce Jiang Zengwei, President of China Development Bank Jiang Chaoliang, Vice President of the Export-Import Bank of China Zhu Hongjie, Vice President of Chinese Academy of Sciences Li Jiayang, Vice President of Chinese Academy of Governance Han Kang, Chairwoman of CPPCC Hubei Provincial Committee Song Yuying, Vice Governor of Shanxi Province Zhang Jianxin, Vice Governor of Jiangsu Province Zhao Kezhi


Vice Mayor of Shanghai Municipality Ai Baojun, Member of Party Standing Committee of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and Party Secretary of Yinchuan City Cui Bo, Member of Sichuan Provincial Party Standing Committee and Secretary of the CPC Provincial Commission for Political and Legislative Affairs Wang Huaichen and Member of Hunan Provincial Party Standing Committee and Secretary of the Provincial Disciplinary Commission Xu Yunzhao. Kenyan Minister of Trade Chirau Ali Mwakwerre visited China and attended the National Pavilion Day of Kenya at the Expo Shanghai 2010. Other visits by Kenyan officials included the visits by Minister of State for Immigration and Registration of Persons Gerald Otieno Kajwang, Minister of Roads Franklin Bett, Minister of Information and Communications Technology Samuel Poghisio, and Minister of Forestry and Wildlife Noah Wekesa.


The exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in economy, trade, culture, education and health were expanded. The two rural schools China built for Kenya under the FOCAC framework were handed over to the Kenyan side. Kenya Moi International Sports Center Repair Project was officially started. The two sides signed a loan agreement on the Olkaria 4 geothermal production well-drilling project. In February, Vice Minister of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council Zhao Yang led the performing art delegation "Cultures of China, Festivals of Spring" on a tour to Nairobi. In February, the National Museum of China, the School of Archeology and Museology of Peking University and the National Museum of Kenya signed the Sino-Kenya Cooperative Archeological Project in Lamu Archipelago Areas Implementation Contract.


In June, the Confucius Institute in the Kenyatta University in Kenya was officially inaugurated. In November, CCTV regional center in Africa (CCTV Africa) was established in Kenya's capital Nairobi. In October, Chinese Navy hospital ship Peace Ark visited Kenya and provided humanitarian medical service to the Kenyan people.
