The relations between the People's Republic of China and the Independent State of Papua New Guinea maintained a sound momentum of development in 2010.
The two countries had close high-level exchanges. In June, Vice Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee Liu Jieyi, Vice President of the Supreme People's Court Xi Xiaoming and Vice Chairman of the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese Dong Zhongyuan visited Papua New Guinea respectively. In August, while attending the 22nd Post-Pacific Islands Forum Dialogue in Vanuatu, Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai met with Minister for National Planning and Rural Development of Papua New Guinea Paul Tiensten who was also attending the meeting.
In February, Special Envoy for China-Pacific Islands Forum Dialogue Du Qiwen visited Papua New Guinea. In September, Prime Minister Michael Somare traveled to China for the Fourth Summer Davos Forum and visited Beijing . During the visit, he had separate meetings with Premier Wen Jiabao and Vice Premier Li Keqiang. In the same month, Minister for Public Enterprises Arthur Somare led a delegation to Qingdao, Shandong Province to attend the opening ceremony of the LNG Receiving Terminal of PetroChina. On 17 September, Minister for Commerce and Industry Gabriel Kapris attended the activities of the National Pavilion Day of Papua New Guinea during the Shanghai World Expo. In November, President of Bougainville Autonomous Region of Papua New Guinea John Momis led a delegation to China.
Bilateral cooperation further developed in areas such as economy, trade, agriculture, health and military affairs. Construction of the Ramu nickel mine project jointly developed by the China Metallurgical Group Corporation and Papua New Guinea was close to completion. The Wewak Stadium and rural clinics built with Chinese assistance were handed over to Papua New Guinea. The projects of the International Conference Center and the Usino-Yamagi highway proceeded smoothly, and the Mount Hagen Agricultural Technical Cooperation project advanced in an orderly fashion. The fifth Chinese medical team actively carried out its work in Papua New Guinea. In August, a Chinese naval fleet paid the first visit to Papua New Guinea and received warm welcome from local people.
In December, the Red Cross Society of China provided US$50,000 of humanitarian assistance to its Papua New Guinean counterpart for combating cholera.
