The traditional friendship and cooperation between the People's Republic of China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) maintained sound growth in 2010.
Bilateral political relations were further developed. On 20 July, NPC Chairman Wu Bangguo met with Chairman of the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) Choe Tae Bok, on the sidelines of the Third World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva. From 9 to 11 October, a CPC delegation led by Zhou Yongkang, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the Political and Legislative Affairs Committee of the CPC Central Committee, paid an official goodwill visit to the DPRK. He met respectively with Kim Jong Il, General Secretary of the Korean Workers' Party (KWP) and Chairman of the National Defense Commission, and Kim Yong Nam, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the KWP Central Committee and President of the Presidium of the SPA.
From 23 to 26 October, General Guo Boxiong, Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission, led a senior military delegation to the DPRK. During the visit, General Guo had talks with Vice Marshal Ri Yong Ho, Vice Chairman of the KWP Central Military Commission, and met respectively with Kim Jong Il, General Secretary of the KWP, and Kim Yong Nam, President of the Presidium of the SPA. From 8 to 9 December, State Councilor Dai Bingguo visited the DPRK. He had talks with Vice Premier Kang Sok Ju, and met with Kim Jong Il, General Secretary of the KWP and Chairman of the National Defense Commission. From 6 to 9 February, Wang Jiarui, Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee paid a visit to the DPRK and met respectively with Kim Jong Il, General Secretary of the KWP and Chairman of the National Defense Commission, and Choe Thae Bok, Alternate Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee and Secretary of the Central Committee of the KWP.
From 3 to 7 May, Kim Jong Il, General Secretary of the KWP and Chairman of the National Defense Commission, paid an unofficial visit to China and had talks with Hu Jintao, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President of China. The two sides reached important consensus on maintaining high level exchanges, strengthening strategic communication, deepening business cooperation, expanding cultural and people-to-people exchanges, and enhancing coordination in major international and regional issues. During the visit, Kim Jong Il met respectively with Wu Bangguo, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the NPC, and Wen Jiabao, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Premier of the State Council.
Other members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang, respectively accompanied Kim Jong Il for tours or joined relevant activities. From 26 to 30 August, Kim Jong Il, General Secretary of the KWP and Chairman of the National Defense Commission paid an unofficial visit to China. He had talks with Hu Jintao, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President of China, in Changchun. The two leaders reached important consensus on staying committed to safeguarding and promoting China-DPRK friendly and cooperative relations. From 29 April to 1 May, President of the Presidium of the SPA Kim Yong Nam came to China to attend the Opening Ceremony of the Shanghai World Expo, and met with President Hu Jintao.
From 1 to 8 November, Choe Yong Rim, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the KWP Central Committee and Premier of the DPRK, paid a visit to the northeastern region of China and met with Zhang Dejiang, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of China, in Changchun. From 30 September to 2 October, Choe Thae Bok, Member of both the Political Bureau and the Secretariat of the KWP Central Committee, led a senior KWP delegation to China. During the visit, he had talks with Liu Yunshan, Member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, and Minister of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, and met with Hu Jintao, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President of China. From 30 November to 4 December, Chairman of the SPA Choe Thae Bok led a SPA delegation to visit China and met with NPC Chairman Wu Bangguo.
From 16 to 23 October, a goodwill delegation of the KWP headed by Mun Kyong Dok, Alternate Member of the Political Bureau, Member of the Secretariat of the KWP Central Committee and Chief Secretary of the KWP Pyongyang City Committee, visited China. During the visit, he met respectively with Zhou Yongkang, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau and Secretary of the Political and Legislative Affairs Committee of the CPC Central Committee, and Liu Qi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee. From 23 February to 4 March, Kim Yong Il, Director of the International Affairs Department of the KWP Central Committee, visited China and met with Hu Jintao, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President of China.
Economic cooperation and trade continued to grow. China remained the largest trading partner of the DPRK and provided assistance within its capabilities to the country. The two countries signed an inter-governmental agreement on the joint construction, management and maintenance of a bridge across the Yalujiang River, and successfully held the launching ceremony for its construction. The two countries also signed an economic and technological cooperation agreement and other bilateral documents during the visit to the DPRK by Zhou Yongkang, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau and Secretary of the Political and Legislative Affairs Committee of the CPC Central Committee.
The cultural and people-to-people exchanges and cooperation between the two countries were more dynamic. Many art troupes of the two countries exchanged visits. A DPRK opera troupe performed A Dream of Red Mansions in many Chinese cities, and the opera Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai was staged in the DPRK, both of which won great success. China's films and TV series were widely welcomed in the DPRK, such as the Chinese TV episodes Mao Anying. The two sides continued government-funded student exchange programs.
