Mr. Kong Quan (Concurrently Act as Chinese Ambassador in France)

Monaco-China Relations

In 2010, relations between the People's Republic of China and the Principality of Monaco continued to develop steadily.

The two sides maintained high-level contacts. In August, Albert II, Sovereign Prince of Monaco, sent a letter to President Hu Jintao to express sympathies over the huge mudslide in Zhouqu, Gansu . Monaco attached great importance to and actively supported the Shanghai World Expo. It was one of the first countries to confirm participation in the Shanghai World Expo. From 5 to 8 October, Prince Albert II headed a delegation of over 100 members, including Minister of State, President of the National Council (the parliament of Monaco), Minister of External Affairs, Minister of Finance and Economy and personages from the economic and cultural communities, to attend the activities of Monaco's National Pavilion Day at the Shanghai World Expo.

Economic and trade cooperation between the two countries made steady progress. China is Monaco's fifth largest export destination and second largest source of imports.

Exchanges and cooperation between the two sides in culture, education and other fields enjoyed sustained growth. In January, the Acrobatic Troupe of Shandong Province won the Gold Clown award at the 34th Monte-Carlo International Circus Festival in Monaco. In October, the Monacan ballet company, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, staged successful performances of "Sleeping Beauty" at the Shanghai Grand Theatre. China Central Television (CCTV) and Monaco Telecom signed an agreement, bringing CCTV's programs to Monaco. Chinese language learning became very popular in Monaco, with over 700 local permanent residents taking up the language lessons.

The two sides continued to maintain good cooperation on international affairs and supported each other at the UN agencies. China and Monaco exchanged support in China's candidacy for the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and Monaco's candidacy for the Committee on the Rights of the Child.

On 19 March, Monaco's new non-resident Ambassador to China Marco Piccinini presented the letter of credence to President Hu Jintao.
