In 2010, the comprehensive strategic partnership between the People's Republic of China and the Portuguese Republic continued to grow steadily with positive results achieved in practical cooperation in various fields.

Frequent exchanges at all levels led to greater political mutual trust between the two sides. From 6 to 7 November, President Hu Jintao paid a state visit to Portugal. He held talks with President Cavaco Silva and met Parliament Speaker Jaime Gama and Prime Minster Jose Socrates. The two sides exchanged views on bilateral relations and regional and international affairs of shared interests and reached important consensus. They agreed to deepen their strategic partnership in an all-round way, enhance communication and coordination in the UN and other multilateral institutions, jointly tackle global challenges and promote world peace and development.

Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi who accompanied President Hu on his state visit held a bilateral meeting with Foreign Minister Luis Amado. During the visit, the two sides signed 12 cooperation documents covering economy, trade, culture, tourism, energy, the banking sector and other fields. This visit by the head of state of China to Portugal, which took place 11 years after the last one in 1999, gave a strong boost to the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries and ushered in a new historical stage for the bilateral ties.

Other Chinese leaders who visited Portugal included: Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region Chui Sai On, President of the Research Development Center of the State Council Zhang Yutai, Director of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television Wang Taihua, Minister of the General Administration of Sport Liu Peng, Chairman of the CPPCC Jiangxi Provincial Committee Wang Julu, Member and Secretary General of the Standing Committee of the CPC Committee of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region Cai Guoying, and Vice Chairperson of the National Working Committee on Children and Women of the State Council Huang Qingyi.

Business cooperation made steady headway. In May, the seventh meeting of the China-Portugal Mixed Economic and Trade Committee was held in Lisbon during which the two sides had discussions on issues existing in economic cooperation and trade and on how to further promote cooperation. The China-Portugal Business Meeting was held during President Hu Jintao's visit to Portugal in November.

Exchanges in culture, education, science, technology, sports and other fields gained momentum. The RTP, Portugal's state-owned TV station, broadcast the cartoon series Journey to the West provided by the CCTV. An exhibition of Chinese musical instruments was held in a number of northern cities in Portugal. Several delegations of Portuguese artists performed in China during the Shanghai World Expo. The "Chinese Bridge" international college and middle school level preliminary competitions were successfully conducted in Portugal and an HSK test was held in the Confucius Institute at the University of Minho.

The sixth round of project proposals for China-Portugal science and tecnology cooperation for 2010-2012 was launched smoothly. Cooperation was carried out between the coffee research center IICT/CIFC of Portugal and the Dehong academy of agricultural sciences of Yunnan province.
